Death Movie was a project that took me 3 years to get the budget. It was all set to rock and roll for an LA shoot, then bang, the world markets got hit and my two wealthy investors were in trouble. A week later I was in a McDonalds emptying bins.
To cut a long story short, I went out and shot Mission X with my wages, and another workers small investment. I am glad I did it, because doors have opened because of this little flick, so Death Movie is back on track.
Its a smaller budget than my original £500,000, but my experience on Mission X has taught me how to make money go a long way, and how to barter deals. I now want to chart the progress from the very start. The first video and text diaries will kick start from this week. How I write, how I get the money, recruit people, etc.
I am not interested in just doing a horror flick. Its much more than that. I am trying to create a transmedia set up too, where characters will also exist outside the 90 minute movie, and you get to know them, care about them before you see the movie.
Also, I really believe filmmakers should also take their films on the road if they have a movie that is best viewed theatrical. My budget for Death Movie will also incorporate a mobile drive-in style tour in the uk, usa, canada, and hopefully groups setting up screenings in other global territories.
If interested in my project, then watch for my future posts. And as always, whether I succeed or fail, hopefully there is always something to learn from this for others, otherwise all this documentation is pointless! As this is not my film marketing, I will have other sites for that for audiences.
cheers
David
